Standard Library is building a team of hybrid developer-designers that can implement high quality designs with equally well-designed codebases.

Our clients are designers that care about developing products that work on every level—executed with attention to detail, performance, reliability, and appropriate interactions. Developers at Standard Library will work directly with these designers throughout the design process, helping to develop the outcome through the lens of modern software. Internally, we’re also developing a handful of products for the type design industry.

Standard Library is optimized for developer happiness. We offer a liberal vacation policy, and provide a yearly conference speaking stipend.

Front-end Software Designer

Standard Library is looking for a mid- to senior-level software designer to lead and manage front-end development across an array of projects. Your task will be to guide the direction of front-end systems, making technical decisions, and standardizing processes and components to streamline the development process.

If your background is in software development: You have a strong interest in design, or a desire to work closely with designers during the design phase of the project. You’ll learn about the details that make a design work well on multiple levels, and eventually help guide the design along interesting pathways based on technical opportunities and limitations.

If your background is in design: You have studied design and have a deep understanding of programming concepts. You’ve built and launched many web apps yourself and with a team, and are now mostly interested in programming, while applying your understanding of design concepts towards building logical APIs, appropriately scoped modules/components, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Extreme depth of CSS knowledge
  • Extreme depth of JavaScript knowledge, with a toolkit of libraries you know inside and out; ideally using functional/FRP paradigms and/or a strong opinion about when another approach may be better suited to a given task
  • Expertise in software testing in JavaScript and at least one other language
  • Expertise in version control, ideally Git and a GitHub-based workflow
  • Some experience with Ruby and/or Rails or a familiarity with a similar MVC framework
Full-time
In-house; Working from our office in Downtown Los Angeles (Willing to consider remote work for the right candidate)
This job is open to candidates needing an H1-B visa
Junior Software Designer

Standard Library is looking for a web developer that has the potential to bridge the world of design and programming. This is an ideal position for a recent design student who used programming as a driving force in their studies, or a web-developer that knows enough about typefaces to be dangerous. You should be able to learn as you go and not sweat the all of the details, but continuously seek elegant solutions and best-practices.
